Piñatex: Pineapple leather, also known as Piñatex, was created by material innovation company Ananas Anam's Dr Carmen Hijosa. Crinkly in its texture, this vegan leather derives from the long leaves that grow alongside pineapples. The leaves would normally be discarded – pineapples only flower and fruit once, and at the end of that process, the leaves are considered waste. Ananas Anam's use of the leaves provides pineapple farmers in the Philippines, where their sources are located, with an additional stream of income. The leaves are transformed into leather by felting the long fibres together to create a substrate. The leftover biomass can also be used as a fertiliser.
Piñatex is made from 80% pineapple leaf and 20% polylactic acid fibres. The material is biodegradable in controlled conditions, but uses a coating made from petroleum resin, which the company is looking to replace with natural resins.
