About Cork

Murmali cork fabric is a natural, 100% biodegradable material. The way the cork fabric is processed allows the material to retain all the qualities that “raw” cork is known for: water resistant, incredibly lightweight, soft to the touch, stain and abrasion resistant, hypoallergenic.

Cork fabric is obtained directly from the outer bark of the cork oak, which grows predominantly in the Mediterranean Sea. This remarkable tree has a bark whose properties and regeneration are unique throughout the plant kingdom.

Cork oak trees can live to about 180 years old, meaning that each tree allows 17–20 cork bark collections. After the harvesting, the tree regenerates, allowing cork to be harvested again after nine years. Bark harvesting has taken place for centuries in the same way, manually, without the need for environmentally damaging mechanization.

All Murmali bags are produced in a small village in the South of Portugal, near the cork tree forests where the cork is sourced from. In their workshop, all their handbags are fashioned entirely by hand with the utmost finesse.

Cork: Cork leather has existed for many decades – in Portugal, where there is an abundance of cork trees, it's a frequently used product among local artisans. Cork is removed from the tree without having to cut the tree down, and regrows after the process, allowing the tree to keep absorbing CO2 from the air in order to regrow the bark._

Cork trees used for harvesting cork can harvest up to five times more CO2 than trees that aren't used for cork production – this is one case where industries are actually positive for the planet. Cork trees in Portugal help offset up to 10 million tonnes of carbon every year. Hence, cork is a naturally regenerative material that renews itself, making it a friend to both the environment and animals, as it's a great replacement for animal skins in fashion. It has been used by Calvin Klein, Jimmy Choo, and Chloè.
