Blending science and creativity, aspect climate projects craft a range of shoes with a positive impact on the planet. Their eco-conscious designs have brought the brand to be “Highly Commended” by Drapers at their 2022 awards.

Founder

With a background of 15 years in the footwear industry, Alex Ward launched his brand from a mix of frustration and optimism: his annoyance at the lack of progress in the industry met a curiosity brought on by material innovation and availability of new materials. As the founder and designer, Alex had the opportunity to inspect every component and choose the processes with the smallest climate impact.

“By using plant-based materials and working with, rather than against, nature, we not only have a cleaner supply chain, but we also add value to an economy that naturally benefits the climate.”

Materials

Using innovative new-generation materials made from pineapple leaves and coconut husks, the brand upcycles these by-products of the food industry and offers farming communities additional streams of income.  Cork footbeds, natural rubber soles, organic cotton laces, GOTS certified pigments, and natural latex padding added to the mix ensures that every aspect of the shoe has been considered for it’s impact on the climate and biodiversity, and this is backed up by an independent scientific review by a conservation consultancy.

Production

aspect climate projects’ designs are handcrafted in Portugal by a third-generation shoe maker with a focus on quality over mass-production.  For each pair sold, the brand offsets one-tonne of carbon using Gold Standard rated projects.
