What is pineapple leather?
Pineapple leather is a plant-based vegan leather made from pineapple leaf fibre. It is also known as Piñatex® - the patented name for pineapple leather. Piñatex® is a natural, sustainably-sourced and cruelty-free material. It is available in many colours and finishes, and used principally for shoes, bags, and accessories.
How is pineapple leather made?
Pineapple leather is a natural material made from pineapple leaf fibre sourced principally from the Philippines. The leaves are the by-product of an existing agricultural fruit industry – and are otherwise thrown away. Pinatex is made from a combination of natural pineapple leaf fibres blended with PLA (Polylactic Acid) from renewable resources such as corn starch or sugar cane, and petroleum-based resin.
Is pineapple leather biodegradable?
Pineapple leather is partially biodegradable. The core material of Piñatex® – the brand name for pineapple leather – is a blend of 72% pineapple leaf fibre and corn-based polylactic acid — is biodegradable in controlled industry conditions.
Is pineapple leather sustainable?
Pineapple leather – also known by its trademark name Piñatex® – is a natural, sustainably-sourced and cruelty-free material. Pineapple leather is not only a sustainable material, but it also makes use of parts of pineapple plants that would otherwise be discarded and so improves farmers' income and promotes a circular economy.
Is pineapple leather waterproof?
Piñatex® Original is water-resistant, thanks to the water-based PU resin coating, but not waterproof. Piñatex’s Performance variant is waterproof.
