Protected Species creates beautiful, high-performance, weather-protective outerwear for women who don’t want to compromise on function or style.
With a team of women throughout the supply chain, the brand has evolved into creating style-led high performance waterproof coats and jackets suitable for everyday activities, not just for hiking up hills. After years of development, through expertise honed from working with major global performance-wear brands, they've created a range of highly waterproof, windproof and breathable outerwear.
Technical performance ratings and attributes have been achieved by employing innovations in fabric technology, which they have fused with smart, iconic, style-led designs. The result: outerwear that's suitable for every occasion, across all weather conditions.
About the Founder
Rebecca McElligott studied clothing design at the London College of Fashion and went on to work for global sports and performance brands across the UK, creating high-performance technical clothing for some of the top sports athletes in the world.
“I was producing waterproof clothing collections for other performance brands, but nothing I was creating assimilated with my own lifestyle. My world, as with most women I knew, consisted of juggling: running between work, social, and family commitments. My life played out across many locations – cities, towns, countryside – for work and pleasure, and I needed an outdoor jacket to be seriously versatile, to blend into all of these backdrops without compromising on style or performance.”
Materials
All jackets and coats are made from 100% recycled polyester.
Production
The mill producing the fabric for Protected Species is based in Taiwan. It is Oekotex-certified, which means every product is tested to ensure it is free from harmful chemicals and safe to wear. The mill is also blue sign-certified – a standard received after a rigorous assessment of the mill’s complete supply chain, where tests were carried out hazardous chemicals and strict adherence to stringent air, water and pollution control was ensured. The mill goes even further in their commitment to a greener future by publicly declaring their own carbon footprint.
The factory used by Protected Species is female-owned and employs and expertly trains workers who live locally to the factory. Protected Species pieces are often sewn from start to finish by one person.
People
All workers are paid a living wage and every process in the supply chain is done in close collaboration with the founder and her team.
Packaging
The brand's packaging is locally sourced in the UK and is made from recycled materials where possible. The brand is working on making their bags biodegradable as well.
Animals
All items sold at Immaculate Vegan do not contain any materials or components using any animal-derived substances, which is something that Protected Species is able to trace.
